Joseph G Trainor, CPA

CFO, The Wistar Institute, Philadelphia

I am a financial executive with extensive for-profit and not-for-profit experience. My career began in public accounting at Deloitte where I oversaw a diverse client base of manufacturing, public utility and not-for-profit in PA and NJ.  I then left public accounting to oversee accounting and procedures for a Philadelphia financial institution. From there, I was recruited into Higher Ed where I spent over 20 years. Now, I am applying my accounting, financial, treasury and research expertise to advance The Wistar Institute, a 126 year old, NCI designated basic biomedical research institution.

From a civic perspective, I am founding trustee for the University City District in Philadelphia, a special services district, which has advanced the quality of life for community that lives, studies, seeks health care and works in University City through cleaning, marketing, safety and training programs.

Personally, I am married and my wife, Vonda, is from rural Alberta, Canada. Professionally, she is senior resources center administrator for Phoenixville Hospital and also has a private massage therapy business.  We also have two sons, Tom and Mike, two dogs and two geckos.

In my spare time, which seems less and less, I enjoy the theater. I have been active with The Savoy Company with its productions at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, PA, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA and various towns in England.  I also been involved with Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra, in Delaware County, PA.
